As housing prices have skyrocketed, the lack of access to affordable housing has become a source of financial insecurity for many American families. In communities throughout this country, people struggle to pay their bills while their rent increases and their paychecks remain the same. Hardworking residents continue to be pushed out of the neighborhoods in which they were raised, and some are ending up on the streets. Advocates say it is unacceptable that owning a home and paying rent is out of reach for the majority of Americans, especially those who have been historically disenfranchised. They claim it’s time to make housing more affordable and reverse decades of discriminatory policies that have denied black and brown families their access to neighborhoods with decent paying jobs, high performing schools and a chance at upward mobility. They say that correcting these problems will create opportunities for families to afford the basics - including health care and education - and lift themselves into the middle class.

- I oppose reforming current home ownership policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Leader John Thune (SD).
- I support improving the housing crisis by building millions of new affordable units, boosting housing assistance, strengthening fair housing laws, and reforming land use regulations by: 1.) Leveraging federal funding to build or rehabilitate nearly 3 million housing units over the next decade. Independent analysis by Moody’s Analytics suggests this could reduce rents for lower-income and middle-class families by roughly 10%. 2.) Providing grants to first-time, first-generation homebuyers. 3.) Expanding eligibility for VA-guaranteed home loans to direct descendants of certain veterans who were previously excluded. 4.) Expanding the Fair Housing Act to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, veteran status, and source of income. 5.) Strengthening the Community Reinvestment Act to hold financial institutions accountable for providing credit to low- and moderate-income communities. 6.) Mandating that housing built with funding from this act has double the federal minimum requirement for physical and sensory accessibility. 7.) Implementing rules to limit the role of private equity firms in the housing market, specifically regarding the purchase of government-owned or distressed homes 8.) Reforming the estate tax to offset the cost of this bill by returning estate tax thresholds to levels from the end of the George W. Bush administration (e.g., a basic exclusion of $3.5 million), and instituting more progressive tax rates on high-value estates, including a 10% surtax on estates valued at over $1 billion And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Sen. Mike Crapo (ID) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
