Winning Issue » STEM FIELDS

STEM is an acronym for the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Typically, this term is used to describe school curriculum as it relates to our nation’s competitiveness in technology and workplace development. STEM advocates say there are many unfilled well-paying jobs for workers possessing STEM skills including machinists, equipment operators, technicians, and jobs in sciences and manufacturing. Studies have shown that 65% of those with a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field earn more than those with a master’s degree in non-STEM jobs, and 47% of those with bachelor’s degrees in STEM occupations earn more than PhDs in non-STEM occupations.

Even so, many young people are still reluctant to study fields that require STEM curriculum. Some of the reasons for this include a lack of knowledge about STEM courses, the challenging nature of these subjects, and not being adequately prepared for STEM courses. And even though women now earn nearly 40% of all STEM bachelor's degrees, they earn only 19% of all bachelor's degrees awarded in engineering and only 18% in computer sciences. Advocates say one reason for this underrepresentation is that many women and minorities who are interested in these STEM careers often are not encouraged by teachers and employers to pursue these fields.

Pending Legislation: H.R.4452 - STEM Restoring Employment Skills through Targeted Assistance, Re-entry, and Training (RESTART) Act
Sponsor: Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (PA)

Chair: Rep. Tim Walberg (MI)

Options

  • I oppose reforming current Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics field policy wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Mike Johnson (LA).
  • I support amending the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act to support mid-career workers re-entering or transitioning into the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce by:

1.) Helping unemployed or underemployed individuals, particularly those from rural areas, return to STEM careers after a gap in employment.

2.) Authorizing $50 million annually for fiscal years 2026 through 2030 to provide grants to small- and medium-sized STEM businesses. These grants allow businesses to offer returnships—paid internships, apprenticeships, or direct hiring opportunities—designed to lead to positions above entry-level with competitive salaries and benefits.

3.) Requiring grant recipients to coordinate with state workforce boards and share best practices for re-entry programs to ensure alignment with existing workforce systems.

And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Rep. Tim Walberg (MI) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.

About: The STEM-Works program supports volunteers that are working in their local communities to increase science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills in our nation by creating a virtual environment where volunteers will find the tools they need to inspire, teach and have fun with young people. And by aggregating information that is currently found in many places, in addition to providing new content, we believe we can provide high quality projects, activities and events for volunteers working with middle school children.
