Winning Issue » FACTORY FARMS

Industrialized factory Farms, sometimes referred to as concentrated or confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), are farms on which large numbers of livestock are raised indoors in conditions designed to maximize production at minimal cost. Pigs, chickens and cows are often housed in close confinement where their movements are severely inhibited. Animals are kept in overcrowded cages, crates or pens without enough space to turn around or lie down comfortably. Egg-laying hens are kept in small cages, chickens and pigs are kept in packed sheds, and cows are kept on crowded, filthy feedlots. There are no federal laws protecting the welfare of animals on farms.

Pending Legislation: H.R.2626 - PIGS Act of 2025
Sponsor: Rep. Veronica Escobar (TX)
Status: House Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry
Chair: Rep. Tracey Mann (KS)

Options

  • I oppose reforming current farm animal confinement policy, and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Mike Johnson (LA).
  • I support amending the Animal Welfare Act to ban the cruel confinement of pregnant pigs in gestation crates, requiring them to have at least 24 square feet of space, allowing them to stand, turn, and lie down, while also establishing financial aid for producers to transition to more humane systems by:

1.) Banning confining breeding pigs in stalls that prevent natural movement.

2.) Requiring pregnant sows to have a minimum of 24 square feet of space to move freely.

3.) Creating a program to help pig producers, especially independent ones, comply with the new standards.

And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Rep. Tracey Mann (KS) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
